This is an algorithm embedded in the firmware of modern ATA/IDE and SATA hard disks; it was developed to erase data from hard disks beyond forensic recovery. If the hard disk is suitable for Secure Erase, the Digital Shredder is much faster than overwriting soft-ware. On average, the program is 8 times faster than a triple overwriting process, and 18 times faster than a seven-cycle overwriting process. With its three drives, the device provides a considerable performance. Once a hard drive has been wiped, the Digital Shredder can recondition it so it can be used again. It can format and partition the hard disk, or it can create an image from a master.
