- More than 25 million people have been victims of identity theft in the last five years. (1)
- Nearly one in five Americans (18 percent) say they've experienced identity theft. (2)
Consider The Facts:
- Identity theft was the top consumer complaint in 2004. The number of complaints in 2004 was up 15% from 2003. (3)
- On average, identity theft victims spend 175 hours of their personal time and $800 to clear their names. (4)
- The Federal Trade Commission estimates it takes victims 14-16 months to clear their names. (4)
What Happens:(2)
- One in six Americans (17 percent) say they've had financial information stolen (bank or credit card number).
- Sixty-two percent of those say someone charged purchases against their personal credit card.
- Fifty-four percent of those say someone charged purchases or withdrew money from their bank account.
- Twelve percent of U.S. consumers say they've had personal information (driver's license, birth certificate or Social Security number) stolen.
- One in eleven (9 percent) of those say someone opened a new bank account in their name.
- One in seven (15 percent) of those say someone obtained a new credit card in their name.
Consumer Perceptions: (2)
- Three in four consumers (75 percent) agree that they would take more steps to avoid being a victim of identity theft if they knew what to do.
- Four in ten consumers (43 percent) think it is unlikely they will be victims of identity theft.
- One in three consumers (33 percent) think there is nothing they can really do to prevent identity theft.
Consumer Concerns: (5)
- Of Americans who haven't personally experienced identity theft, 35 percent say they think it is somewhat or very likely they will have their personal financial information stolen.
- Consumers are very or somewhat concerned that financial information could be stolen from:
- Mail (55%)
- Garbage (40%)
- Home (33%)
- Workplace or school (25%)
