DUPLO USA to Present its Latest in Modular Digital Print Finishing Solutions
Duplo USA will feature its extensive line of modular digital print finishing solutions at booth# 3622 at Print ‘05 in Chicago, IL. These top-quality Duplo products are designed to satisfy the short runs of the growing print-on-demand market. Duplo will feature its SCC (slit/cut/crease) bookletmaker, the second generation digital slitting, cutting, and creasing machine – the DC-645, the DBM-500 2KT two-knife trimmer, and the Duetto system. In addition, Duplo will present its Duplo Muller system built for high-volume continuous and cut sheet applications as well as the air-fed DP-460H digital printing system and a variety of additional bookletmaking, folding, and bindery solutions.
DSF-2000/SCC Bookletmaking System
The SCC (slit/cut/crease) bookletmaking system incorporates a DSF-2000 sheet feeder (with optional barcode reader), the SCC unit, a DBM-500 bookletmaker and a DBM-500 trimmer. Designed principally for the production color digital market, the SCC-equipped bookletmaking system takes care of two common issues associated with digital color output. First, the SCC unit side slits and trims the head and foot of each sheet. This provides an accurate full bleed trim which is registered by a CCD camera to the image, rather than to the physical dimensions of the sheet – this means that image drift can be corrected. Second, the SCC module can crease the cover and innermost sheets of the booklet, or all the sheets in the booklet so that image cracking on the fold-line is prevented.
DC-645 Slitter/Cutter/Creaser
Building on the success of the DC-545HC slitter/cutter/creaser, Duplo is featuring its second-generation machine - the heavy-duty DC-645. The DC-645 has the ability to read printed images and automatically adjust and compensate for the common problem of image shift. It slits, cuts, and creases in a single pass, reducing waste and ensuring optimum productivity. The new features which set it apart from the DC-545HC are its high duty cycle, the ability to manage heavier substrates (up to 310gsm) and larger sheet sizes, the first and only ultrasonic double detection sensor in the market, a reject tray, and its ability to cut full-bleed, 20-up business cards on a 12” x 18” size sheet. With a state-of-the-art user interface, the DC-645 has been specifically developed to support the JDF industry standard.
DBM-500 2KT Two-Knife Trimmer
The DBM-500 2KT provides a uniquely modular approach to trimming all open sides of a booklet. An optional unit to the DBM-500T face trimmer, the DBM-500 2KT trims the head and foot of completed booklets. The initial settings are programmed from a user interface on the trimmer and are then transferred to the main memory of the finishing modules. The operator can then call up frequently used jobs from a single user interface. Duplo’s modular equipment allows users to build up their system as their needs dictate, starting with a simple face-trim function then adding the head and foot trim when required. Full-bleed jobs can now be transferred directly from the press to the finishing device without the need for trimming on a guillotine before or after stitching and folding.
Duetto System
An advanced hybrid solution based on the System 5000, the Duetto incorporates a DSF-2000 dynamic sheet feeder, up to three DC-10/60 collators, DBM-500 bookletmaker and DBM-500T trimmer. The Duetto is the first system to offer a combined offset and digital print finishing solution by accepting the documents on a set-by-set basis from the DC-10/60 collating towers or sheet-by-sheet from the DSF-2000 sheet feeder. For instance, sets printed on conventional offset presses are loaded into the DC-10/60 then collated and fed into the bookletmaker, whereas sets printed on a digital print engine are stacked in the sheet feeder which is attached to the rear of the collating towers. The pre-collated sets are fed in sequence, bypassing the collators and into the bookletmaker where the sheets are accumulated and then processed into booklets.
Duplo Muller System
Duplo Muller systems epitomize on demand finishing with its extremely high speeds and versatility. Designed to be connected in-line or off-line to continuous roll/form printers, a Duplo System 5000 bookletmaker, or folding/inserting system, the Duplo Muller system is the most versatile cut sheet and continuous feeding system on the market. Modular in its design, Duplo Muller systems are tailored to fit each customer’s specific needs. Featuring at ON DEMAND will be the unwinder to cut sheet and bookletmaking system. Other possible applications out of an endless array of configurations include merging several unwinder systems or cut sheet feeders in a single line for bookletmaking, inserting or stacking; unwinding to cut sheet printers; and cut sheet to bookletmaking, folding, inserting, or tape binding of checkbooks.
DP-460H Air-Fed Digital Printing System
The DP-460H leads the industry as the world’s first air-fed digital printing system. It offers a cost-effective alternative solution to short runs, taking on single and spot color jobs from 25 prints and up at 600dpi. A 3,000-sheet high capacity feeder diminishes downtime while an automatic plate change is carried out within 22 seconds. The DP-460H incorporates a vacuum-feed system which eliminates paper marking and offers faster rerun for duplex and spot color work. At speeds up to 130 prints per minute, the new digital duplicator is ideal for producing order sheets, invitations, envelopes, exam papers, newsletters, score cards, menus, tickets, stationery, and more onto a range of stocks from NCR to card and envelopes at weights of 11lb. NCR to 110lb. index. The DP-460H is fully network compatible (PC or Mac) with RIP or a Duplo print server, offering computer to press imaging up to 1,300 prints in just ten minutes.

Destroy documents while shopping with first mall shredder in nation
Knight Ridder Newspapers
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — It's a sign of the times. Crouching there in an entry hallway to Chapel Hills Mall, just a few steps down from the Dippin' Dots machine and the Portrait Studio photo booth, is an industrial-strength self-serve shredding machine.
RealTime Shredding Inc., a family-run business from Monument, Colo., has just started renting the space from the mall, providing security-conscious consumers with a convenient way to turn all their personal documents into mulch.
This 5-foot-high document eater is the first of its kind nationwide, according to the company's research.
"We see this as something that could take the industry by storm, like ATM machines," said RealTime president Amanda Verrie. "Eventually we see these machines being all over — in shopping malls, grocery stores, banks, apartments, smaller business and medical centers."
Such optimism is supported by a 2005 survey released jointly by the Better Business Bureau and Javelin Strategy and Research, which shows 9.3 million American adults were victims of identity fraud during the past 12 months at a cost of $56.2 billion...

Leveraging the Power of JDF Across the Bindery
“Our goal is to show printers and trade binders how advanced digital control in the bindery can improve their bottom line” says Standard Finishing Systems Managing Director David Reny. “The Horizon i2i system brings post-press automation, productivity, and efficiency to any finishing environment, and it harnesses the full power of JDF across the bindery when customers are ready to implement a fully-integrated workflow.”
The Standard Horizon Bindery Automation Theater will feature two live JDF print production workflows in cooperation with industry leaders EFI, Hiflex, Kodak, Komori, Ryobi, and Screen. Saddlestitching and perfect binding jobs will flow from creation to finishing in fully-integrated JDF-driven workflows, to show real-world interoperability, cost savings, and other benefits. When these jobs enter the bindery, they’ll be managed by the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System.
In one workflow, the Hiflex MIS system will create a saddlestitching job and route JDF data to the Kodak Prinergy workflow management system for pre-press and to the Ryobi Smart Net color printing system and 750 series press. The JDF post press data will be sent to the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System, where finishing parameters will be consumed. After being printed in the Ryobi booth, the job will be delivered to the Standard Horizon booth, where i2i will issue JDF job tickets for the APC-66D paper cutter and the StitchLiner 5500 sadlestitching system, for fully automated set-up in accordance with parameters in the JDF file. These finishers will report a range of production statistics in real time over a network to the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System, which will relay the data back to the Hiflex MIS system for closed-loop reporting and cross-enterprise visibility.
The other live workflow will be a perfect bound job. The job specification will be entered on the EFI Hagen OA management system, and then sent via JDF to Komori's JDF-enabled workstation, K-Station. Screen Ritecontrol will create and submit the JDF file for press and post press. After printing on the Komori Lithrone 40SP, the sheets will be sent to the Standard Horizon booth, where the Horizon i2i Bindery Control System will consume the JDF post press data, calculate the necessary settings, and issue a JDF job ticket to convey the set-ups to the automated Horizon AFC-744 folder for signature folding, and the automated 9-clamp Horizon CABS4000 system for perfect binding and three-knife trimming. Real-time production data will be captured and reported to the Hagen OA management information system.
The Horizon i2i Bindery Control System provides feature-rich bindery control, including bar-coded job tickets for automated machine set-up; the ability to save and recall recurring jobs; a job scheduling planner; and the capture of production statistics for accounting and analysis. Job status and work-in-progress on all i2i-connected machines can be monitored in real time from a central console for better-informed scheduling, staff planning, and equipment utilization. When i2i is integrated upstream, this data is also visible to customer service, estimating, production planning, and management. Legacy bindery equipment that is not i2i-networked can also be included, allowing cross-bindery data collection and a complete management window into bindery operations.
Standard will also be a focal point for the CIP4-sponsored Post Press Interoperability Trail, which will direct visitors to leading graphic arts suppliers providing JDF-enabled solutions. Six of the eight trail stops will be active participants with Standard Horizon in live JDF workflows.
In addition to the production workflows featured in the Bindery Automation Theater, the Horizon i2i system will be using JDF data to drive automated set-ups and capture production data on over sixteen different Standard Horizon folding, cutting, perfect binding, collating, bookletmaking, and saddlestitching solutions located throughout the Standard Horizon booth. Even without JDF control, these systems provide quick, accurate changeovers using advanced touchscreen operation and servomotor-control for end-to-end automated set-ups.

Seal Deals With Unique Self-Mailers
Distributors can add value to their services by offering new document flow strategies. One method that's been around for a while and is increasingly popular in stat-of-the-art mail rooms is self-mailers. Pressure seal, the latest version of self-mailers, has emerged as an efficient alternative to folding and inserting.Pressure seal mailers are laser-printable forms with a pre-applied cohesive glue line around the form's edges. Once the form is folded, thee glue patterns line up on all sides, and the form is sealed by pressure. This creates a folded document sealed on four sides that's ready to mail without an envelope conforming to U.S. Postal Service regulations.
Companies looking for a fast, reliable, low-cost alternative are opting for pressure seal, which is ideal for a broad range of applications. For example, the process is used in checks for payroll, accounts payable, refunds and settlements. Pressure seal mailers can incorporate various security features, including imprints, watermarks and serial numbers. The checks require less manual handling and limit access to classified information. Pressure seal also is used for tax forms such as 1099s and W-2s. These security-sensitive mailings are difficult to handle on most folder inserters because of form and envelope design. Other popular uses of pressure seal include PIN codes, renewal or appointment notices, packing slips, class schedules, lab reports, statements and invoices.
Advantages of Pressure Seal Equipment
Differences exist between folder/sealers for pressure seal and folder/inserters or inserters. Folder/inserters and inserters provide a level of flexibility because they can handle multiple sheets and inserts, unlike self-mailers. They also don't require specialized forms. Although an inserter can't match the cost-effectiveness of a folder/sealer, the typical long-term cost difference between pressure seal forms and paper/inserters and envelopes is marginal.Pressure seal equipment retains a strong advantage in terms of machine output per dollar. Whether leasing or buying a folder/sealer, the initial investment is typically 50 percent less than a folder/inserter with equivalent monthly output capacity, which translates into annual savings. Pressure seal equipment also offers advantages in terms of the number of documents processed per dollar. At equivalent price points, the output of pressure seal equipment is up to four times faster than that of an inserter. In an office, a $10,000 folder sealer will output documents at 11,000 per hour while a $10,000 inserter will output at 2,300 per hour. At the production level, a $50,000 folder/sealer for pressure seal will output at 35,000 documents per hour, and a similarly priced inserter will output at 8,000 documents per hour. The cost efficiencies gained through equipment cost and labor have led to the increased use of pressure seal.
"After reviewing the different options available to us, our decision became a no-brainer," says Bob Hindle, payroll manager for the U.S. division of Sylvania, a lamp and materials company headquartered in Danvers, Mass. "Using a pressure seal form with pressure seal equipment for payroll checks and W-2s reduced our costs and headaches, and enabled the payroll department to be more productive" and focused on customer service.
But why is pressure seal just now becoming a standard process in today's mail rooms? First, pressure seal's predecessors used heat-seal and water-based techniques. It's understandable why these processes didn't find acceptance--both have issues inherent with their sealing methods. Glue seal machines utilize pumps, reservoirs and applicators to lay glue on normal paper, but haven't gained popularity because of the complexity of the task and difficulties experienced due to machine error. In the pressure seal process, forms are passed through a set of stainless steel rollers, which activate the cohesive glue. The result is a simple, clean process. Second, manufacturing sources and capacities for pressure seal forms have increased during the past few years. New manufacturers and higher production have increased supply to a point where the costs associated with pressure seal forms have been driven down to a level comparable to envelopes and paper.
A Flexible, Safe Solution
Different formats are available for duplex and simplex printer types using pressure seal mailers. Duplex printing utilizes a C-fold format that allows maximum printable space. A 14-inch version of this format incorporates a tear-off remittance as well as a return envelope with return address. To maximize printable space on a simplex printer, the most common form type is an uneven Z-fold. Certain form manufacturers incorporate built-in windows to allow addresses to show through using a C-fold format. Perforations on pressure seal forms ensure crisp, concise folds resulting in the address being located squarely in the window.Pressure seal technology also offers security, which can be measured in two ways: the recipient's safety, and the confidentiality of the recipient's information. Pressure seal eliminates the likelihood of putting wrong information into an envelope or stuffing two checks into one envelope. Also, the time and resources used to correct such mistakes disappears.
Pressure seal forms are available in a generic blank format or preprinted in up to six colors. They're available in cut sheet, continuous fan-folded, or as 50-inch rolls to easily adapt to various processing systems. They can incorporate bar codes, integrated cards or labels, and include a registered-mail format.
Advantages of pressure seal mailers include stretching budget dollars by eliminating envelopes and storage costs, and maximizing postal discounts by printing postal net bar codes directly on the piece. Also, not utilizing a window envelope reduces problems associated with documents shifting within an envelope and limits readability concerns. The direct-to-mail pressure seal approach also lends itself to simplified sequencing for mail preparation and sorting
It's time to revisit 1-piece mailers. They're a superb solution for customers who want a more streamlined and productive solution, and a safe, secure way to mail.

Off-site shredding vs. shredding at the source.
Off-site shredding vs. shredding at the source.
Documents that are for your eyes only are always the ones that “others” want to see. When it comes to protecting your company, your clients and their identities, shredding sensitive data is imperative. But shredding your data BEFORE it leaves the building is the only way to be ABSOLUTELY SURE it was destroyed PRIOR to someone else seeing it. The more hands your documents pass through, the bigger the potential for your documents to be viewed by others.
Remove the risk, cut the cost, enjoy the confidence.
Hospitals, banks, law firms, large corporations—no organization that handles personal and/or sensitive data can afford to put these documents at such a risk. The liability can be tremendous and potentially devastating. The cost of outsourcing your shredding needs is also A CONSTANT EXPENSE. It will never decrease. Maintenance, labor, travel, other machinery and even inflation will take their toll on your bottom line. The other off-site shredding service disadvantage that always remains a constant? THE RISK.
Remove the risk and cut costs by shredding at the source with Destroyit® document shredders from MBM. Your MBM representative can help you set up an in-house shredding program that is more secure, convenient and economical than using an outside firm.
DESTROYIT for good!
Destroyit shredders from MBM are fast, efficient and shred a wide range of materials. Their durable cutting heads can take staples, paper clips, credit cards, CDs and more, depending on the model. Strip cut and cross cut models are available in six security levels.

Plus with over 50 models to choose from—there’s a Destroyit model to fit your needs and your budget.
If a shredding service handles your sensitive data…YOU INCREASE THE RISK!
- It leaves the building.
- A stranger is handling your data.
- It could be lost or misplaced during transport.
- It has the potential to fall into the wrong hands.
- There’s no way to positively know your documents are being destroyed without taking time off work to watch the process.
- You pay more.
- If the shredding service box becomes full, sensitive materials may end up being stacked next to it until the scheduled pick-up time.
- Destruction of documents may experience unexpected delays due to weather, traffic, vehicle maintenance problems—all situations out of your control!
If It’s Shredded at the Source, IT’S GONE. FOR GOOD!
- From your hand, it goes into your on-site shredder.
- You see it destroyed—you eliminate the risk.
- Offices stay neater. No boxes of waste waiting to be picked-up (and/or looked at).
- One efficient, economical cost—plus potential for recycling revenue.
- You’ve protected your customers…your employees…your company!
Where is your confidential material today?
Contractors for off-site shredding deal in bulk. The faster they work the more clients they can service. With low-cost labor, their profits get even higher. This combination of speed and cut-rate labor not only brings more to their bottom line, it elevates the potential for MORE MISTAKES—HIGHER RISK.
The more you know, the better MBM looks.

Swingline's New Family of Punches Brings Breakthrough Design, Performance and Comfort to the Punches Category
The LightTouch™ Desktop Punch, LightTouch™ High Capacity Desktop Punch and the Precision Pro™ Punch, coming to market August 2003, offer aesthetic appeal never before seen in the punching category. Rounded contours and metallic color combinations give the punches an aesthetic edge, while engineering technology enables each punch to reliably make precise punches. All of the punches require less pressure to operate, with the LightTouch models making punching 50 percent easier than any comparable punches on the market. In addition, the Precision Pro breaks new ground by offering crisp, clean cutting action that enables superior punching, via patented die-cast pins.
The new punches will be available through office product superstores and office product dealers.
"In talking with consumers, Swingline has found that people want visually appealing office products that get the job done, consistently and as easily as possible," said Joy Pineres, category manager for punches at Swingline. "Swingline's new family of punches is the first to make punching truly easier, and to do so with style."
The new LightTouch and Precision Pro punches build on the momentum of Swingline's LightTouch Heavy Duty Punch. Introduced in 2001, the LightTouch Heavy Duty Punch raised the bar on the punching category as a high capacity punch that makes heavy duty punching easier and faster to execute. The LightTouch Heavy Duty Punch also affords 50 percent less effort to use, so only light pressure need be applied to the padded handle for instant, accurate results for up to 32 sheets.
Lever handles that require less pressure to operate are the key attractions of Swingline's LightTouch Desktop Punch and LightTouch High Capacity Desktop Punch. In addition, both models provide added value by featuring a durable, all metal construction and easy-feed punching area adjustable for two- or three-hole punching needs. The punches also have built-in paper centering guides to ensure accurate punching every time, and keep things tidy with an easy slide-out chip holder that prevents spills when emptying. To keep papers secure, the High Capacity model has a handy lock-down feature, ideal when space is limited and storage necessary. Paper capacity ranges from 12 sheets for the Desktop model to 20 sheets for the High Capacity Desktop version. Both punches will be offered in jet black/silver and blue/silver.
The Precision Pro Punch, designed for up to 10 sheets, stands out from competitors with its one-of-a-kind cutting action. Its die-cast punch pins generate accurate punches unmatched within this punch price category. Its metal construction features contoured edges covered in soft plastics, a first in desktop punches that makes for a more comfortable stapling process. Also offered is a paper guide and chip holder, just as with the LightTouch models. To complement office décor, the Precision Pro will be available in jet black/silver and blue/silver.
MSRPs for the punches are as follows: the LightTouch Desktop Punch ($26.59), the LightTouch High Capacity Desktop Punch ($36.59) and the Precision Pro Light Duty Punch ($16.29).

The Diversification of Document Disposal
For instance, the misuse of confidential information has been a delicate subject lately. Specialists must now take care of not only the safe storage of sensitive matter, but also its safe disposal.
Document disposal technology has been developed over many years. Today, the paper shredder is no longer a rare sight or a novelty machine, but rather a typical part of the modern office workplace.
The paper bin is obsolete
In offices of all kinds and for administrations with hundreds of workstations, the modern "paper bin" is a paper shredder. With a wide variety of products, there is a suitable model for any set of requirements, in terms of performance, operating comfort and security. Paper shredders can be divided into the following performance and function groups.
Desk models
These devices are ideal for shredding paper documents in small offices or at home. Positioned next to or underneath a desk, they can be loaded easily and start their work automatically.
Office paper shredders
Office models include high-performance units under desks in large, mulit-person cubicle environments and central devices for larger offices. The larger office machines can shred not just paper, but also CD-Roms with ease.
Computer listing shredders
High-performance, high-volume shredders fit the needs of computer departments and offices with wall-to-wall tables. They can handle paper, computer lists (i.e. continuous-form printouts), credit cards, CD-Roms and floppy disks.
Conveyor-belt paper shredders
Designed for large computer departments and archives, these central units can chew through not only paper, plastic and electronic media, but also paper clips, binders and phone books without difficulty.
A level field
The different models of shredders can also be categorized by their individual safety levels, cutting variants, strip widths, particles sizes and throughput performances.
Level 1 is the least secure safety level, designed for shredding general documents, rendering them illegible. The cut is 13mm (1/2") strip by 38-76mm (1 1/2" to 3") particle cut.
Level 2 is for internal documents, such as employee rosters or receipts. This strip cut is between 6 and 13 mm (1/4" and 1/2").
Level 3 is considered a confidential shred for such documents as those containing personnel data and information. The cut is either a 1.6mm strip or a 3mm cross cut.
Level 4 is used when the confidentiality of documents is essential for a company's existence, as with financial records. The shred is a cross-cut, 1/16" x 5/8".
Level 5 is for secret documents that carry extraordinary security requirements, as in some government offices and research laboratories. The shred is 1/32" x 7/16".
Finally, Level VI tm is the highest security level to date, developed [by HSM of America] to meet the requirements of the most secretive govenment departments. The shred measures 1mm x 5mm.
Buyers should seek and choose equipment that offers operating comfort, solid technology, low-noise operation, a long service life and high operating efficiency. They should also check whether maintenance, service and support will be easily accessible.
Get the air out
Residual materials -- such as cardboard, foils and light sheet metal -- are valuable. Mere common sense dictates that as much material as possible should be returned into the production sysle. Fortunately, the technology for collecting, separating, compressing and transporting such material is now available in sophisticated form.
Baling presses -- which compress material for recycling -- have been developed in a similiar fashion and at the same time as shredders. They are now an important link in the recycling chain. In the retail trade, for instance, compact units that require little space offer high performance for the compression of packing materials. Depending on their application, they compress vertically or horizontally.
There is now a wide and sophisticated range of products. The vertical baling presses are semi-automatic and can be housed directly where waste accumulates. Horizontal presses can be advantageous in rooms with low ceilings. Barrel presses, characterized by short cycle times and simple handling, are designed to compress light sheet metal or rolling hoop barrels.
Channel baling presses are fully automatic and designed for central warehouses and other high-use customers. They are used mainly in the disposal of production materials and other recycling material. They can handle large quantities of packing materials and production residues.
The advantages are clear. Compression saves space in expensive storage and transport areas, while also simplifying the handling and recycling of valuable materials.
Combining technologies
Today, there are also very efficient combinations of paper shredders and baling presses. The technology has evolved in response to the increasing demand for complete disposal systems.
Horizontal and vertical baling presses can be combined with conveyer-belt paper shredder to create a full system, wherein waste material is first shredder and then compressed into compact bales. This type, volume and frequency of the material to be compressed determines what performance class is required.
In many government agencies, large administrations and banks that use these types of systems, ever-larger heaps of files are shredded into illegible particles or strips, then automatically compressed. The combination systems can operate reliably in multi-shift applications.
The development of shredders, baling presses and combination systems never stands still. Production processes are constantly being optimized, procedures improved and personnel trained in their use.
Equipment is customized for individual desk use, offices or different types and sizes, waste disposal specialists and other user groups. For any given department or agency, there is a model that will meet its needs.
