Paper Shredder Safety Alert
CPSC Document # 5127
Paper Shredder Safety Alert
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) wants you and your family to be safe if you have a paper shredder. From January 2000 through December 2003, CPSC received 31 reports involving finger amputations, lacerations, and other finger injuries from paper shredders. The majority of injuries were to young children, ages 14 months to 2 years old. Young children are interested in imitating adult activities. This puts children at risk of injury. Children may activate the shredder when an adult is not present. Injuries can occur even when an adult is supervising a child. Children’s fingers can be pulled into the paper shredding mechanism if they don’t let the paper go.CPSC offers the following safety tips when using a paper shredder:
- Never allow children to operate paper shredders, even under adult supervision. Paper shredders can pull children’s fingers into the shredder mechanism.
- Place the paper shredder in an area less accessible to children.
- Unplug the paper shredder power cord when not in use.
- Do not place hands or fingers in the shredder.
- Do not operate a paper shredder while wearing loose fitting clothing that may enter the shredder opening.
- If wearing a tie or long necklace, use caution to keep these items away from the shredder opening.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of serious injury or death from more than 15,000 types of consumer products under the agency's jurisdiction. Deaths, injuries and property damage from consumer product incidents cost the nation more than $700 billion annually. The CPSC is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard or can injure children. The CPSC's work to ensure the safety of consumer products - such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters, and household chemicals - contributed significantly to the 30 percent decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 30 years.
To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury, call CPSC's hotline at (800) 638-2772 or CPSC's teletypewriter at (800) 638-8270, or visit CPSC's web site at www.cpsc.gov/talk.html. To join a CPSC email subscription list, please go to www.cpsc.gov/cpsclist.asp. Consumers can obtain this release and recall information at CPSC's Web site at www.cpsc.gov.

Paper Shredders & Identity Theft
Don't Let Your Valuable Private Information Become Public! Use a Paper Shredder
Paper and information go hand in hand. Unfortunately, paper with information...private information...can go from your hand to someone else's all too easily. It might surprise you to know that going through the trash, either your company's or your personal home trash, is not illegal. Once it is put outside in a trash can or dumpster it is fair game. That's right, it's perfectly legal for someone to go "dumpster diving" and take whatever information they find. Disturbing? You bet. No wonder paper shredders have become so popular. It's not just computer identity theft you need to worry about it - although that's a concern! If you don't safely shred private info like credit card receipts and bank statements you are inviting the thief in!
Your image of shredding paper may be of harried Enron executives shoving reams of incriminating documents into a big metal behemoth. Sure, that's on the more dramatic end of the spectrum. Nevertheless, companies and individuals all have sensitive material that needs to be disposed of and simply tossing it into the nearest trash bin is not the smart way to get rid of it.
The government has shredded documents for years. In recent years legislation has been passed mandating disposed information be unreadable, especially medical and financial materials.
No one should dispose of paper documents with sensitive information by just tossing them in the trash. Names, phone numbers, social security numbers, credit card receipts, customer information, financial and health documents and trade secrets are just some examples of paper you should shred. Identity theft is real.
Some businesses and government agencies are also required to dispose of documents properly which may include using a paper shredder. For example, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) lays down strict guidelines for protecting the privacy of patient's health information and there are heavy fines/penalties for not being HIPAA compliant.
Shredding paper is also better for the environment. You reduce the volume of waste and some people even use shredded paper for packing material (just be sure it is not sensitive material that could be pieced together without too much effort).
Identity theft has become one of the fastest growing crimes in America. Over 12.7 percent of Americans reported they were victims of Identity Theft in the last five years. The misuse of existing credit card accounts has increased to over 71 percent in the last two years. Over all, Identity Theft has increased by over 41 percent in the same period of time. Identity Theft is a massive crime and it is virtually without risk to the perpetrator. Unbelievably, only 25 percent of Identity Theft victims actually report the crime to the authorities. In 2002, estimated financial losses to American businesses were over $33 billion dollars due to rampant identity theft. The average victim lost over $10,200.00, and that does not begin to include the cost needed to recover from the abuse.
A Paper Shredder is Your #1 Defense Against Identity Theft
New Research Shows That Identity Theft Is More Prevalent Offline with Paper than Online. Factory Express is making it easier for you get the paper shredder you need to protect yourself and/or your clients against identity theft. With our featured paper shredders, we are doing our best to help you find the equipment you need at the right price. Factory Express carries top quality paper shredders with comprehensive warranties, and since we buy direct from the factory, we can pass the savings on to you. Don't fall victim to opportunistic thieves. Shred all confidential material before you throw it away.
There are a large number of paper shredders on the market today. The two main types are strip cut shredders and cross cut shredders. Strip cut paper shredders slice the paper in one direction. This results in thin vertical strips of paper. Strip Cut Shredders are good in many situations, but they are not recommended for people requiring maximum security. Cross cut paper shredders cut documents in two directions, both vertically and horizontally. The resulting chad resembles confetti and in effect the paper is rendered to tiny bits of paper that are nearly impossible to reassemble. Cross cut paper shredders are generally better than strip shredders for high security situations, but they are also more expensive and will require more maintenance. For the best protection against identity theft choose a cross cut shredder.
If you're not shredding the following items, you need to be! Bank Statements Credit Card Receipts and Statements Cancelled Checks Confidential Letters Expired Vehicle Registration Financial Records Expired Credit Cards, Debit Cards & ATM Cards Federal and State Tax Returns, etc.

How to Start a Paper Shredding Business
Paper Shredding Business Opportunities are blossoming up everywhere because in recent years, privacy concerns and new policies have forced companies all over the country to invest in paper shredding services. Large corporations and small are in need of shredding services.
Even in many homes, people have purchased small, trash can sized paper shredders for mail and receipts. Most businesses will not be able to shred the material they have by purchasing one of these same machines. First, the small machines are not capable of the volume. Secondly, companies in general are downsizing staff and it is unlikely that they are going to pay someone to feed documents into a tiny shredder all day.
That is where you come in. Investing in a paper shredding business now is like buying a gold mine. The list of documents the Federal Government says must be destroyed is getting lengthier everyday. Every time you sign a document, be it a job application or a credit card receipt, there is a time limit that the receiving company has to hold that document. After that time limit, they are required by law to destroy, or shred, that document.
Large corporations can take in thousands of signed resumes' a year. Restaurants and retail outlets that have not gone to electronic signature devices can have thousands of credit card receipts a month. Think of all the banking records that come due for destruction every week. Now think about the amount of tax documents that need to be rotated and destroyed every year. These are just a few examples of the growing necessity of paper shredding businesses for confidential document destruction.
Mobile shredders are a fantastic investment, as the shredding device is built into the back of a large truck trailer for onsite paper shredding. This allows the shredding company owner to go to the client for onsite shredding. Companies spend thousands of dollars warehousing these documents that often get kept years past their required time because no one wants to deal with all that paper. Mobile paper shredding would allow you to go directly to their warehouse or storage facility. Clients will appreciate not having to pay someone else to have all of this information brought to you.
Even in this electronic age, there are still things that will be in paper form. Recorded documents and legal papers are still required to have pen and ink signature. Many companies are even having computer components such as hard drives and floppy disks shredded for security purposes. The federal government requires such stringent privacy laws due to identity theft and fraud, that nearly any document with a name and address on it must be destroyed after a certain period of time. This continuing process virtually guarantees that a confidential paper disposal service would thrive in the right hands.
Time limits for document destruction will play in your favor as well. Nearly every set of documents has a different holding date. For example, resumes and cover letters have a hold date of one year, if the applicant was not hired. Hired applicants can have part of their file destroyed in three years, for example, the application and some privacy statements. Corporations as well as individuals are required to keep tax records on file for three years. Companies that process financial data, such as banks and paid tax services, will always have documents that are in need of destruction. This gives you the perfect opportunity for a home employment paper shredding business.
Things to consider when thinking about a paper shredding business will depend on what type of service you wish to offer. Having a fixed location where people can bring their records to you for destruction is one idea. However, it is worth considering purchasing a mobile shredding unit in addition to this or even as the sole business operation. Mobile paper shredding will allow you to be even more flexible to your clients needs.
The demand in this industry will only be growing in the coming years as laws and policies change. It is clear that this is a growing enterprise. Be it on site shredding with a mobile shredding unit, or a permanent paper shredding location, you can be sure that there is a public in need of this critical service.

My Paper Shredder Won't Stop Running
In most cases this is a problem caused by the photo eye in your paper shredder. This device is located directly in the middle of the feed throat where you put the paper in. The photo eye basically tells the motor when there is paper being inserted into the shredder. When the eye is covered it thinks paper is going in, so the motor turns on. tThis means that if this eye is obscured the paper shredder will keep running. Check to make sure that this photo eye is not being blocked by anything. Most of the time this will occur due to a buid up of paper dust and oil. To clean the eye, make sure that you unplug your paper shredder first. Take a clean rag or cotton swab and remove the debris from the photo eye. This sould solve the problem and restore your shredders functionality.
If this technique doesn't work then you will most likely have to replace the photo eye assembly or circuit board. One other possible technique is to adjust the trim pot on the circuit board if there is one. Sometimes this simple adjustment will fix the problem, although it is a more advanced repair and should only be attempted by the technically savy individual.

Do you have a Paper Jam?
Paper Shredder Maintenance
Shop for Paper Shredders
Paper Shredder - Paper Jam
Most jams can be simply backed out with the reverse button, while more stubborn jams may require the assistance of you tugging while reversing it out.
If you have jammed your shredder so bad that you can no longer back out the paper, don't worry because there is a solution. Most paper jams are caused by improper use or overexursion of your paper shredder. Proper maintenance can prevent jams and keep your paper shredder in prime running condition.
With any type of shredder you can use the same technique:
Soak the jammed paper with some shredder oil and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Once it is completely saturated try to run the paper through again in both forwards and reverse. For the most part, this technique is going to clear most jams. However; if the shredder still doesn't budge you probably have a more serious problem. NOTE: make sure to unplug you paper shredder before attempting to dislodge any obstruction or perform any repair.
Make sure to check the circuit breaker on your paper shredder to see that it is fully pushed into place. If all looks good with the circuit breaker , but you still get no response from the paper shredder and the jam doesn't move, stop pushing the button. Most people will continue trying the button until something happens, but most likely nothing ever will and you will just end up doing further damage to your paper shredder. You could wind up burning out relays, switches or even the motor itself. This is probably the most common source of paper shredder repairs, so be careful to not make the situation worse for yourself.
If you find that your paper shredder is in need of repairs, make sure to check and see if it will be covered under your warranty. If you need paper shredder parts or are ready to trade up to a better model contact Factory Express at (800) 399-2564.
